Hoton Parish Council News - September 2019

Wanted: Parish Councillors
Would you like to be a 'voice' for your community? Hoton urgently needs more councillors. The current councillors fear that if, for whatever reason, one of them is unexpectedly unable to continue in their role, Charnwood Borough Council will appoint people who may have no connection with the village to serve on the council. This is obviously something that residents would want to avoid because it could mean that decisions about maintenance, spending and the management of the playing field are made by people with little or no knowledge of the parish of Hoton.

What does a parish councillor do?
Parish councillors serve the local community by engaging with local residents and deciding what services and projects the parish council will deliver to improve the quality of life for those living in the village of Hoton and elsewhere in the parish. Your current councillors find this an enjoyable and rewarding position. Examples of village improvements that we are currently working towards are: putting in a dropped kerb to make it easier for less-able residents to cross Vinetree Terrace; adding a seat to the bus stop on Loughborough Road; and installing a gateway feature to reduce the speed of traffic entering the village on all roads into Hoton.

The role is not time consuming, no more than a couple of hours a week on average, with meetings held on the first Monday of each month. The main job of a councillor is to participate in the collective decision-making processes of the parish council. You don't need any qualifications - just commitment and enthusiasm.

If you want to make a difference by getting involved, please contact the clerk (details below) or speak to one of the current councillors. As we have several vacancies, it is unlikely that you would need to stand at an election. Go to for more information.

Neighbourhood Plan
The Neighbourhood Plan for the villages of Hoton, Burton on the Wolds, Prestwold and Cotes has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council. Your views are sought and you have until Wednesday 9th October 2019 to make comments.

This is the final chance for you to have a say. Any comments made during this period of consultation – positive or otherwise - will be forwarded to an independent examiner who will undertake an examination of the Wolds Villages Neighbourhood Plan. He will then decide whether or not to recommend the plan go forward to a referendum for adoption.

The plan is the result of many years of work by councillors and residents from all the villages and the content has been shaped by your responses to previous consultations. For more information on the Wolds Neighbourhood Plan, visit

Advance notice of sporting events
There are a number of major sporting events taking place over the next couple of months which will result in additional traffic using Prestwold Lane. The dates of these events are as follows:

28 September 2019
20 and 26 October 2019
3 and 23 November 2019
8 December 2019
25 January 2020
7 and 21 March 2020

In addition, 700 competitors from the Seagrave Wolds Challenge will pass through the village on 9 November 2019.

Bulk waste collection
Charges for collecting bulky items, such as kitchen appliances and furniture, will be introduced by Charnwood Borough Council in October. Currently, this service is provided free of charge but from 7 October there will be a £20 charge for each collection up to three items per year. Items collected by the council are broken up, so if items are reusable you may wish to consider donating them to a charity, many of which collect items for free, or advertise on one of the many 're-use' sites. Further details are available on .

The introduction of charges may lead to an increase in fly tipping; if you see any large items dumped on the roadside please report this to .

Bus services
We have been informed of some changes to the buses that run through the village. The Centrebus no.8 'school run' service will operate with two buses to avoid overcrowding. It will leave Hoton at approximately 7.50 am and return from Loughborough at a later time of 16.00. The times of all other buses on this route remain unchanged. For the Kinchbus No. 9 to Nottingham, the County Court stop has been relocated to Spaniel Row.

Police report
There were no crimes reported in July; in August there was one vehicle crime.

Next Parish Council Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Monday 4th November 2019 at 8pm in Hoton Village Hall. Residents are always welcome at our meetings; time is allocated for your questions or comments.
